What Are the Various Alternative Energy Sources?

Fossil fuel has been the biggest source of energy for centuries, but the world is now looking towards the alternative energy sources as fossil fuel pollutes the environment, while alternative energy is friendly to our environment. These renewable sources of energy promises to reduce the harmful by-products of fuel such as Carbon di-Oxide and Carbon Monoxide, and also helps to preserve many natural resources that we are now using as source of energy.

In order to understand the importance of alternative energy resources that how they can help in preservation of existing natural resources such as fossil fuel and how they maintain the ecological balance of the earth, it is important learn what types of alternative energy resources are available out there.

Wind Power:
Wind energy can be used by wind machines where turbine blades rotate with the flowing winds and this rotation is converted into electricity. Wind tower with turbine blades are built together in wind farms and the electricity is used to provide energy to the farms or to an isolated locations or individual homes. Older wind machines would convert the wind energy into mechanical energy which was used to do physical work such as pumping water or crushing grain.

Solar Power:
This is the most common and effective alternative energy source available out there. Solar energy is commonly used heating, cooking and producing electricity. In a solar cell, sunlight hits semiconductor material such as silicon and the electron of the outer orbital of silicon becomes free that causes the production of electricity. Another method, sunlight hits solar thermal panels and produces heat.

Geothermal Energy:
Geothermal energy comes from the heat energy present beneath the earth’s surface. In order to produce geothermal energy, some holes are drilled in a region, and the hot rocks hit the water and make it steam which rotates turbines. These turbines power electric generators.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Solar Energy

Solar energy has many advantages when compared with the hydro-carbon energy. It is not only good for your pocket, but it is also environmental friendly and this is why the use of solar energy is increasing day by day. However, there are some negative sides are also available for solar energy along with the advantages.
Advantages of solar energy:
1. Solar energy is renewable resource and on the other hand, oil is not. Most of the people of the world are now using solar oil energy to fulfill their regular demands of energy. But oil sources are not unlimited. Soon it will be gone, but sun is a constant source of energy and it will never finish.
2. Solar cells are sound free. They never make a single peep when extracting energy from the sun. But generators make huge noise, which is annoying to everyone.
3. Solar energy doesn’t create any sort of pollution at all. Perhaps it is the most important advantage of using solar energy instead of oil energy. On the other hand, oil energy is impractical, polluting our environment with harmful gases such as carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases.
4. The maintaining cost of solar cells is extremely low since the source is sun which is free.
5. Solar panels and lighting may seem expensive to you when purchasing first time, but if you have a plan to use it for a long term, then it would definitely be a great deal. Unfortunately, running oil machine needs great investment and in addition the price of oil is increasing day by day.
Disadvantages:
1. Solar cells and panels are very expensive when you purchase it for the first time.
2. Solar cells cannot produce electricity on a cloudy day or night or during storm and because of this you may use oil to supply power to your home.

Factors to be considered before setting up a solar farm

In the process of doing the feasibility study for a land for setting up a solar plant there are some general but important considerations.decided upon first of all-whether CSP or Solar PV,Average sunny days per year,The number of sunshine hours per day which are necessary for capacity sizing of the solar farm.The plant capacity sizing would also have financial implications.Isolation of the plant is necessary since farms surrounded by hills, tall buildings or other structures may be casted upon by shadow from these structures.Leveling of the land to make sure there is no peculiar local gradations.Isolation considerations for transportation of construction materials to the site and costs involved.Availability of workforce to run the plant.Availability of stand-by power to run the plant during down-time.

India Specific Issues with Roof-top Solar Installation

The Delhi government has formulated a roof-top solar policy- under which consumer would set up solar panels on their roof-tops and feed extra power generated into the grid.Some of the physical issues are summarized below grid-tied roof-top solar is producing/sourcing power through cheaper means (through diesel gensets/biogas/re-routing grid power back to the grid etc) and feeding it to the grid at higher rates,This is particularly important since the price differential between power produced from Solar and the grid is enormous at this point in time,Power distribution lines and home wiring were designed for electricity to flow from power stations to appliances, but households with solar panels do the reverse of this. This can lead to voltage levels which can rise and can damage appliances connected to this grid,Areas with a lot of solar panels can push the voltage up to the maximum allowable level, triggering shutdowns in the individual systems and taking the load off the grid,Size of conductors and cables in the streets would have to be upgraded so it can handle lots of solar generated power, versus times when there’s lots of load and no solar,Typical solar panels will last for 30 years or more while the roofs should be maintenance free for that period. So roof augmentation prior to solar installation might be necessary which can lead to additional costs.

New battery could lead to cheaper, more efficient solar energy

A joint research project between the University of Southampton and lithium battery technology company REAPsystems has found that a new type of battery has the potential to improve the efficiency and reduce the cost of solar power.Data was collected by connecting a lithium iron phosphate battery to a photovoltaic system attached to one of the University’s buildings, using a specifically designed battery management system supplied by REAPsystems.

Engineers create tandem polymer solar cells that set record for energy-conversion

In the effort to convert sunlight into electricity, photovoltaic solar cells that use conductive organic polymers for light absorption and conversion have shown great potential. Organic polymers can be produced in high volumes at low cost, resulting in photovoltaic devices that are cheap, lightweight and flexible.Reasearcher said By using cells with different absorption bands, tandem solar cells provide an effective way to harvest a broader spectrum of solar radiation. However, the efficiency doesn’t automatically increase by simply combining two cells. The materials for the tandem cells have to be compatible with each other for efficient light harvesting.
